Prairie Pioneer Taken By Death
GRANGEVILLE – Mrs. Katherine McEvers, 88, who first came to the Pacific Northwest in the 1880’s by covered wagon from San Francisco, died at 5:45 Wednesday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Dutch Hazelbaker, with whom she had lived for the last six years. Death was due to the infirmities of age.
Mrs. McEvers was the widow of the late Reuben McEvers, pioneer miner of this area.
She was born at Lexington, Ky., on April 7, 1864, and later lived in Indiana, New Mexico Territory and Mexico. She was married to Reuben McEvers on May 18, 1877.
After mining in Mexico, Mr. and Mrs. McEvers moved to San Francisco in the 1880’s and later traveled by covered wagon to Valley, Wash.
In 1904, Mr. and Mrs. McEvers moved to Whitebird and lived there and at Orofino until his death in 1917. She had since made her home with her children.
Besides her daughter here, Mrs. McEvers is survived by five sons, Reuben, Sacramento, Calif.; Grover and Ben, Orofino; Joe, Chehalis, Wash;, and James, Cascade, and three daughters, Mary E. Wilson, Palmdale, Calif.; Myrtle Floch, Sacramento, and Olive Winslow, Spokane.
